Maria Therese von Brunsvik (1775-1861) was one of the five children of Count Anatol (1745-1793) and Countess Anna Brunsvik (1752-1830) , well established Hungarian aristocrats. Therese was the eldest child, but the next two children, Franz (1777-1849) and Josephine (1779-1821) were also very musical, and became intimately acquainted with Beethoven after the Therese and Josephine visited Vienna with their mother in 1799. Franz, a cellist, corresponded with Beethoven from Budapest until at least 1814, and received the dedications of op. 57 and op. 77. respectively.

Therese, who never married, was briefly taught piano by Beethoven, and to her he dedicated his sonata op. 78. Her memoirs and correspondence with Beethoven have been well documented by La Mara, 1920.
